Created in 1944 by tiki legend Trader Vic at his Oakland restaurant, the original Mai Tai features aged Jamaican rum, fresh lime, orange curacao, rock candy syrup, and French orgeat, shaken and served over shaved ice with lime and mint.
The name “Mai Tai” comes from a guest’s Tahitian exclamation “Mai Tai-Roa Aé,” meaning “out of this world—the best.” Since then, the Mai Tai has become a beloved classic, symbolizing tropical relaxation and the spirit of aloha.
